Admins Question of the day... mohahahaha.
In Gear
Here are 3 interlocking gears. The largest gear has 14 teeth, the middle gear has 12 teeth, and the smallest gear has 6 teeth. The largest and smallest gears can only move in a clockwise direction, while the middle gear can only move counterclockwise. ![]() The gears are in their starting positions now. Suppose you turn the largest gear, and you want to keep the gears turning until they are back in their starting positions. How many turns will each gear have to make in order to return all 3 gears to their original starting positions?

The gear to turn ratio is 1:1 1/6:2 1/3
>Every time you turn the 1st gear, the 2nd rotates --- times, the 3rd rotates --- times. In order for a gear to complete a full turn (return to its starting position) there can't be any fractions. Therefore I functioned the whole ratio with 6 to do so. The new ratio is ------ If I turn the 1st gear -- times, the 2nd rotates -- times, the 3rd rotates -- times; all back into their original position. Last edited by Bill; 11-14-2007 at 11:05 AM..
