Water Pump Replacement Question
I ordered the neccesary parts to fix the leak from the water pump. Spent about 40 dlls in parts not bad actually. The problem is the dealer wants 2 hours of labor and at 80 per hour it's actually bad. I put the link which shows an exloded view of the water pump assembly. It seems that the pump is actually sealed and it only has two screws holding it to the block. I bought the impeller, mechanical seal, oil seal and housing o-ring. You guys think I can do this easily, or would it be best to take it in?? Thanks.

Re: Water Pump Replacement Question
It depends on your mechanical skills.
You can find in the forum the shop book in wich you are explained how to rebuild the water pump. But beware of the tightening torques. overtightening the bolts will ruin the pump wich is made of relatively soft material. PS: My bikes water pump had a factory leak and it was rebuilt in a bit more than half an hour, in the yamaha dealer. I watched the operation and it seemed to be a fast and easy operation.

Re: Water Pump Replacement Question
Well took me about 2.5 hours but I succesfully replaced the water pump!!! Ran into some trouble extracting the mechanical seal from the inner housing. I ended up using a 3 inch 3/8 extension to tap it out. The oil seal and bearing must also be tapped out. I used some deep sockets which worked fine. I know it sounds ghetto using sockets and extensions, but that is all I had. Only special tool required is a small snap ring plier. I would suggest to also replace the inner pump housing, that way you don't have to extract anything. So it came out to me saving two hours of dealer labor, about $160!! Time for a new jacket!!!
Also changed the oil with help from the search function. Used Rotella Synthetic 5-40 and Purolator Pure One 3.25 in. filter. Thanks. |

Re: Water Pump Replacement Question
Way to go!
Not at all. I keep an extra set of cheap sockets just for this purpose. I hack and file on them to make them fit my purpose. I'm not talking pressing bearings or that kind of force, but for fitting seals and light pressure they work great. |
