Rapid Acceleration

Has anyone had the problem of rapid acceleration? I'm a seasoned rider and a couple of times without my doing anything I felt the bike accelerate. Maybe my imagination but was pretty sure it happened. What would cause this? Thanks, Leo

i have this problem all the time, then i figured out that i was twisting the throttle all the way!!!

Re: Rapid Acceleration

I've never experienced this without having done something to cause it to occur. Could it happen on it's own? Sure but the ECM would have to be getting false input from the TPS or along those lines which in turn would cause an increase in rpm as well as speed.

Re: Rapid Acceleration

It would have to be an additional source of air to the engine. A vacuum leak downstream of the throttle bodies could cause this. But before you tear the intake apart looking for a sporadic vacuum leak, make sure you're not just twisting the throttle by accident.

Re: Rapid Acceleration

'Tis a torquey little I-4, you know...

I have to consciously work all the time to remember to keep it cracked open a little so I don't make it go *chunk-chunk* when slowing and going.

Is it racing?
Does it do this when you leave it running in neutral and you're not on it?

Hmmm...

The Yamahas are a little racy, if you know what I mean, and can easily accelerate with minimal twist of the wrist. That's a good thing, but if you haven't been on it a long time, it might just catch you off guard.

Keep it cracked in the turns a little, and that keeps good weight on the rear wheel which gives you more control. It eases the steering too having weight off the front wheel.

Re: Rapid Acceleration

Make sure your kill switch works if you're one of the riders who always turns the bike off with the keys rather than using the switch. Just in case.

I knew there was a reason I have never used the key to turn off bikes. I love that switch...

+1, you beat me to it. That sounds like what the problem might be. Mine would do something similar as well.

The last time I had this problem I found myself goign 140 in a 70, the time before I was going 87 in a 60 and got a ticket. My court date is 22JUL08, damn this is going to hurt...
