Gas station issues, helmet off?

Hi,

I'm wonder if anybody has this problem:

When I go fill up my car at the gas station, pull in next to a pump, get out, put the nozzle to the gas tank, swipe my prepay key, then select the octane and start pumping, no problem here.

When go fill up my bike, I get off my bike, keep my helmet on, nozzle to the tank and swipe my key, my transaction is cancelled and asked to go see the clerk. So, I wait, let the pump reset, and start filling up and going inside to swipe my key at the counter with my helmet on.

So, now when I fill the bike, I get off, take my time and take my helmet off and do the same procedure as for my car, no problems.

Anybody having this issue? Is it cause my gas station thinks I'm gonna do a pump and run eventhough I have a prepay key and points card? Or is there some policy about the gas station camera being able to see your face?

Re: Gas station issues, helmet off?

This is a common problem in the UK.
There was recently a case in point involving a supermarket chain which insisted that a rider removed his helmet before paying at the till, yet then immediately served the next customer who was wearing a Burka.
He complained about the obvious double standard but they said that the policy stood.
The annoying thing is that this chain has a facility to pay by card at the pump but their terminals are regularly out of action.

Motorcycle news in the UK runs a page on their site where readers can list anti and pro bike filling stations.

No problems here (Chicagoland), with helmet on.

I did have to go in once a few weeks ago, it was my third pump at that station in about 2 hours. (cage, gas for lawnmower, then finally the bike) So, I assume it was the bank moreso than the gas station.

Removing your helmet is a good thing to do for safety reasons. If a fire were to start, your hearing would be impaired with the helmet on and you may not notice the fire right away. Even a few seconds wasted before realizing a fire is burning could be the difference in getting hurt/killed

Re: Gas station issues, helmet off?

if there were a fire i would prefer to be wearing a helmet.. personally at least.

But back on topic, no i have not had that problem around here. if the pump won;t take my card for whatever reason i will leave and go to the next station, i refuse to inconvenience myself for something so petty. and if they don't like it then they don't get my money.

Re: Gas station issues, helmet off?

Besides the aforementioned safety concerns, it probably makes the clerk feel better to see your face. One day I was walking into a Burger King and was still in the process of taking my helmet off and the guy at the counter started screaming "take off your helmet!!!!" and at first I was kinda pi$$ed but I think if I was in his shoes thinking this guy may have a gun and in a few seconds it may be in my face...... I would want his helmet to be off also. It sucks we have this bad name to the public but I do whatever I can to make it better.

It's probably for the security cameras as well, the guy with the burka is still showing his entire face. Unlike us behind the helmet, its only a small portion of our face. Not sure but just my $0.02

Taking this into concideration.... put your helmet up on your head where your face is showing...... see what happens.

A burka is usually worn by a female and only reveals enough face for her eyes to see out of.

Here is a burka bandit:

Some actually have a mesh window for the woman to see out of.

You're more likey to smell or see it first... Small fires just aren't that noisy.... Big fires (with explosions) would be noisy, however, if you can't see a big fire happening and people running screaming, hearing loss from the helmet is the least of you worries...
