Easiest and most effective mod ever????

Well having moved from an R1 to this wonderful Fazer 600 I own there were obvious pros and cons - pros being that I could ride accross London to a client without thinking I was forever ruining any chances of having children (and only those of you who have ridden an R1 in dense city traffic will know what I mean) - but the major con - to be honest - was the lack of close slow control - as so much of the time its stop start - for some reason I just seemed to be unable to make my FZ6 (S2) pull away smoothly.......

And then I figured out part of the problem.....

It appears that Yamaha put a 1/8th turn of slack in the trottle cables - meaning that for the first 1/8th of your twist with the right hand nothing happens - so............. I got my 12mm spanner out and took up the slack - total time 53 seconds - result? SO MUCH BETTER CLOSE CONTROL! its almost like a different bike.

And guess what? When I took it in for its first service last week - they re-introduced the slack back into the cable! Ha. So as soon as I got it home I took it out again.

So - for no cost and 53 seconds I would like to vote that this is the best ever mod.

(the only other things I have done is put an evo-tech tail tidy and some Pazzo levers (for my slightly small hands).

Oh - and I took the 'Fazer' stickers off the side of the fairing coz they looked a bit naff.

Cheers.

James.

If you like that you should try the -1 front sprocket. Oh, and I agree about the stickers.

Right - so that increases acceleration slightly yes? How many cogs are there usually - what percentage difference are we talking here?

Re: Easiest and most effective mod ever????

I don't remember what the spec for slack in the cables is, but not 1/8 of a turn. There needs to be a little bit for expansion and contraction and other reasons, but not that much. Glad you're enjoying your "new" bike lol.

Do a search for sprocket mod, or -1 sprocket.

How did you adjust the throttle slack? I am bored to search in the manual.

Greetings James:

Normal ratio is 16/46 or 2.875 then -1 is 15/46 or 3.067.

Should give you nice little jump on low end.

Re: Easiest and most effective mod ever????

dropping one cog gains acceleration but also puts the speedo out

the guys on the vfr forum done a test with 1 and 2 less teeth

with no changes the speedo was out 7%

with 1 less the speedo was out 14%

and 2 less its 21%

a fair amount out so remember to get urself a speedo healer or similar if doing this

You have a look under the left hand side of the bike under the tank and all will be revealed.
