Is the rear hugger needed?
I will post pics. I did some mods on the weekend and in doing so I also took off my hugger as I WAS going to paint it but after looking at it with it off I really liked the look of the bike. Its an illusion and makes the swingarm and tail section look cleaner and sportier , I think anyways. But besides kicking up road grime to my under carriage is there a real need for it. Does it compromise my chain alignment or anything like that?

Re: Is the rear hugger needed?
I would keep a few inches on the rear hugger to protect the rear shock from being constantly sprayed with crap...
Other than that, I would not worry about it. I cut mine, but left a little meat to it just for the shock. It used to look like this: ![]() ![]()

Re: Is the rear hugger needed?
Remove it you'll be glad you did, it does make the back half look cleaner IMO

Re: Is the rear hugger needed?
No, it's not needed but it does keep the underside of your bike clean.
It's funny to me that folks here are taking them off. I rode a vfr for years, and in that community, one of the first mods most people did was put a hugger on. You can definitely take it off, but they do serve a real purpose. If I were to plunk down the dosh for a Ohlins or other high-end shock, there's no way I'd run it without the hugger. ymmv. |

Re: Is the rear hugger needed?
Exactly the same in the Suzuki Bandit community i previously used and although i was pleased to see one on the FZ as standard ..the plastic matt finish is a bit of a cop out..colour coding would deffinatly set it off better..i guess in dryer climates all you need to worry about is stone chips and rubber flakes..but here in the UK where the roads are wet and dirty in the summer and damp and salty in winter, not having the hugger would present a whole host of other issues

Re: Is the rear hugger needed?
Cleanlyness is the only reason i see same as the big arse rear fender. Both serve a purpose but look too much.
