600-1,000 mile service
Can most of the 600-1,000 mile service be done by yourself or is it best to have the dealer do it? I do the basic maintenance myself, but was wandering if I should have a dealer do some of the recommendations.

Re: 600-1,000 mile service
There's a lot of stuff listed in the manual for the first service than just changing the oil. How much of that is really necessary?

I wonder the same. It's easy money for the dealers to charge us for stuff that they might not even do.

Re: 600-1,000 mile service
I asked my dealer about doing my first service check and he stated that it is basically only an oil and filter change, and suggested I do it. So I said thanks and did it myself, saving up to an hour labour charge.
I also lubed my cables and every 500 km lube the chain as well. |

Re: 600-1,000 mile service
DIY and save the cash for mods.
Got a good torque wrench? Got the service manual? See the spec sheet for all the nut and bolt torque specs? Just run down the list and hit every one you can see and get to on the bike. Change the oil and filter, clean and lube the chain, check for proper slack. If you live in a dusty area or have to travel dry dusty roads, check the air filter. Check air pressure in both tires. Check steering head for any play. Lube cables. Adjust play in throttle and brakes.
