A close call this afternoon

Was coming up I-15 from Tooele this afternoon; driving in the centerlane, another vehicle in the left-hand lane next to me, slowly passing. Up ahead in the right lane was a truck towing a smashed-up car.
I didn't notice that tow truck at first. What I did notice, was a big red hood, pulled off the wreck, about 25' in the air and flying right at me!
I couldn't veer to the left because of the other vehicle, and for whatever reason, I didn't hit my brakes. Thank bawno I didn't, the hood flew over the top of my cab (so low that I instinctively ducked) and it hit the pavement behind me, slid into the passing lane and off the road. Fortunately it didn't hit anyone.
I passed the towtruck, honking my horn trying to get his attention, he ignored me. He couldn't ignore the cop that was right behind us who was pulling him over. Thumbs up
I had two fears running thru my head at the same instant. One, my new truck was going to get banged up, or two, that hood would fly just right, thru my windshield and decapitate me. Damn, and it all happens so fast! Being on the bike would've been even more scary, and possibly fatal.

Re: A close call this afternoon

Wow, that was close

You lucky "duck"... pun intended...

The bike scenario would have been far worse indeed, so whats the fine for an unsecured load in your state??

Hope he got a big fat one!!

Re: A close call this afternoon

That's why whenever I see a pickup truck, utility truck, any other vehicle for that matter that has any loose articles that are placed in the back of the truck, I always make sure I'm ahead of them, or I'm waaaay behind them just for that reason. You know these kinds of vehicles below....

Landscaping vehicles with rakes, shovels, trash,
Pickups carrying construction equipment, ladders, wood, etc
Any vehicles that has something tied down on their rooftops, luggage, etc ( come on, are you going to trust some stranger's knowledge and ability to secure something down with some straps )?

Re: A close call this afternoon

Glad to hear that it ended up okay. Just goes to show you that you can drive/ride as safely as possible but some stuff is out of your control.
