Jeremy Clarksons views on being English

To all the non English peoples of this glorious forum this quite accurately sums up, as far as I'm concerned, what it is like being English nowadays:

We’ve been robbed of our Englishness | Jeremy Clarkson - Times Online

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. See, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughing at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it . . .

Ever thought about overthrowing your government, and having lots of nannies shot? Just saying you know. It worked pretty good here for about 1800 years. Its past due again though. I think speed cameras are one of the signs its time.

I dont know if i agree with it all.

The english conqured ireland and let truth be told, tormented my ancestors for hundreds of years...but is that a bad thing?

Yes and No.

I believe that the world would be a worse place if England did not have such a powerful empire in the years gone by. Looking at dublin, I must say that I am proud of the buildings that I can now call "Irish" as they are under irish rule but in fact these buildings couldn't get any more English if they tried!! The english left in their wake quite alot of destruction but at the same time they left behind reminants of a nation that is proud, powerful and didn't flinch when opposition came their way. Dublin today has some of the best examples of English buildings within the island of ireland...and of course Northern Ireland which is still under British rule...(note I didn't say English! )...I now live in Northern Ireland and must say that if the north was no longer ruled over by the powers that be in London then it most definaltey would not be as good as it is today. I work in cancer research and the UK as a whole puts so much time and money into funding this fight that even someone as republican and proud as myself can not find fault in the UK and especially the English. You may feel that your country is no longer as powerful as it once was but do you really think that it needs to be? You should be proud of your history, heritage, country, ancestors...and you most certainly should fly your flag proudly regardless of what others may think about that.

What I'm trying to get to is that, even though the english past is tainted with death and destruction (what countries history isn't!!!), their legacy which lives on today must be respected and admired.

Did Grannys exist 1800 years ago in America? haha....pity america wasn't discovered by the noble English and Spanish at that stage!

I just had a Brit spend a couple days with us.... I learned alot about the differences between our countries. He was a good sport.

I am on a list to provide hospitality for cross country cyclist.

you can see a brief snippet of him on you tube on my blog (link below)

I heartily agree with Clarkson, I know somethink him boorish. But, he is one of those rare people who doesn't mind what other people think of him & is prepared to stand up & be counted.

Truth is that a small minority of psuedo politically correct liberals has infected the the psyche of government with groupthink that being patriotic is wrong.

Steps down off soap box, goes & makes a nice cup of tea.

I do agree in part with Clarkson and yes I think every county should be proud of thier country.
Well the Dutch developed Apartheid in south Africa, opressed the indonesians and swapped New Amsterdam (now New York) for Suriname. These are things of the past, but the Dutch are still proud of thier heritage.

I find it totaly rediculous that you can't be proud of your own country, as this could be portraid as right wing.

There is nothing wrong with being proud of your country, Defending your home, your family, your friends, your way of life. The fact is people who do not defend themselves are either killed, assimilated, or subugated. It sucks. But the fact is, if we lay down our arms, and say we aint a gonna fight no more, someone who will, moves in and takes over.
Life is not a easy, loving, hugfest. Kindergarten is great, but people need to grow the hell up.

subugated Steve what a great word:

tr.v. sub·ju·gat·ed, sub·ju·gat·ing, sub·ju·gates
1. To bring under control; conquer. See Synonyms at defeat.
2. To make subservient; enslave.
