Bit Torrent

Am I a retard or what? On second thought never mind...

WTF with Bit Torrent??? Is it typical that once you find a file to download, MotoGP races in this case, that the download doesn't start, or it will take 13 hours to download 1GB? I'm not expecting lightening but I wold like to watch a race tonight.

What the heck am I missing???

Re: Bit Torrent

Depends on a lot. what program are you using? On Utorrent you get at indicator at the botom to show your connection status. If it isn't green you will not get a good connection to the swarms. Typically your down load rates will be down @ 11.kps or so.

Or you may be on a torrent that only has a couple people seeding/leaching. The more people on the torrent, the faster it runs. The S/L numbers represent the seeders and leechers. A seeder is just uploading, a leacher is downloading but also uploading at a slower rate.

Look through the options to see if there is a 'test connection' test and run that. Also look for torrents with multiple seeders.

Re: Bit Torrent

Many torrent applications allow you to limit the download (and upload) rate, so might check to see if your torrent app is throttling it, althought I think the default is to run wide open.
For me, poor performance is typically due to limited peers as previously mentioned.
And last, I will occasionally attempt to download a torrent, only to find the peer requires sign-up or password or something. Even in these cases, I've found that I may eventually get the file, but it takes days due to very low xfer rate.

Re: Bit Torrent

and if you are running through a router you want to make sure you have the ports fowarded correctly hence the connection status. it will cause a big drop in speed. 11k mabe if you are on dsl. more for faster connections. and you do want to throttle your upload speed. if you are uploading to fast it will limit how fast you can recieve and acknowledge the incomming packets.
if it's a good site post and we may want some of it too

Re: Bit Torrent

You'll want to look at the number of Seeds and Leechers of what you are downloading. In uTorrent, you'll see the numbers in brackets with the number you are connected in front. for example: 5(100) where 5 is how many you are connected to and 100 is how many are available.

If it's a low number of seeds or leechers you will find it is slow. most of the time the people seeding and leeching are also on something like DSL or Cable. Typically, DSL and Cable have pretty fast downloads but slow uploads. So, if their upload is only 1.5Kb/s and you have 5 connections -- you're maxed out at 7.5KB/s.

The tips above by others, regarding port forwarding etc. are excellent and worth checking out as well.

There's a few tips on uTorrent's website

Re: Bit Torrent

Hey! Using torrents is wrong!

I'll get back to this topic after I finish watching Zombieland and Up on my home theater.

Another tip. Use isohunt or piratebay. They display comments with their torrent listings that really help weed out fakes and bad copies of whatever you might be looking for.

Thanks for the tip. I've found more often than not sites want my email, etc. Its seems I waste a lot if time trying to find a good place to download.

I will admit I've only been using it for a few weeks and don't have a good feel for the process yet.
