I was wrong

No pics for this just a description...sorry.

I wired a cigarette ligher onto the bike to power my GPs.

I brought 2 wires directly from the battery. The live side had a fuse on it.

The unit worked but over a few days it drained the battery. Even when I disconnected the lighter socket from the wires, the battery still drained. I do not know why.

I have recharged the battery and it starts great.

NOW I NEED HELP.

I want the lighter socket to power up ONLY when the ignition is on. If I take the live to the battery where can I take the negative lead.

I need a DETAILED description and hopefully a photograph.

I hope you guys can help me.

Regards

Steve

Re: I was wrong

did you leave the equipment plugged in when you shut off the bike? if so, then that is why the battery went dead. you could try wiring up a relay to use one of the switched systems to control the onn/off of the equipment that you are running.

Re: I was wrong

No I took the GPS off.

I will have to look at getting a relay unless I can wire direct into a system.

Any ideas?

Re: I was wrong

And to think I asked for a simple write up of this mod and a few pictures from Mr Numpty who said it is easy. Edit_ Mate I am not trying to be smug. I am an electrical disaster with machines. It sounded so simple when you guys were discussing it. Could your battery have had a power surge and that drained it or damaged the cells?
I hope you get it sorted.

Neil

Re: I was wrong

if you unplug all the equipment then there is no reason that it should draw any current, if you leave it plugged in and simply shut if off then it will keep some power draw to retain it's memory, unplug the GPS if you don't want to draw any power, if not then you should be able to tap off the headlight wires and have them power the gps system without a substantial draw on the system.

but the safest way possible is to use the headlights as the switch and direct hook to the battery using a relay.

Steve: Disconnect the ground side of your battery and connect a test light in between the lead and the battery terminal. If the test light lights, then you've got a draw on your battery somewhere. If it does light, disconnect the cigarette lighter socket and see if the light goes out. If it doesn't, something else is drawing a current. Next thing to do is pull fuses one at a time until the test light goes out. That should narrow down as to where or which component is drawing current.
