Unhappy Corrosion Under Gas Cap *Pics*

Has anyone noticed any sort of corrosion or rust under their gas cap? I noticed some rust or something that looked like it was coming from underneath the rubber lining thing that goes around the filler hole and on the head of the allen screw that is in there.

I am considering taking the whole gas cap off to clean and apply something to prevent further corrosion. Is there much to taking the cap assembly off? Anyone done it before?

I noticed this when I got to get the bike out a few weeks ago, and it has been eating at my brain ever since. I haven't had the right weather when I have had time, or time when the weather was nice to get it out and dink with it.

Any suggestions on what I could apply after I clean it up to ensure I don't have any problems in the future?

Thanks

Re: Corrosion Under Gas Cap

It was in a non-heated garage all winter and I had the tank full. I will be where the bike is at tomorrow and I can maybe get a couple of pics and investigate it more.

Hopefully I can simply take it off, clean up the corrosion (hopefully coming from a small spot or something), and seal it up with something. It's really been bugging me but I haven't been around to mess with it so hopefully tomorrow I can. I'll try to get some pics too.

Re: Corrosion Under Gas Cap

if the tank was full then you should not have that much of a problem, the issues start when you leave the tank a good bit empty, rust will start wherever air us in the tank.

Yea, the tank was full, and the inside is spotless. It's the area on the outside of the tank around the filler hole.

Thanks. I'll try to get pics tomorrow.

I have it too. I am going to go spray it with gun oil now. Thanks for reminding me.

Re: Corrosion Under Gas Cap

Its from washing the bike, and riding in the rain. It gets water under the gas cap and holds it against the seal.

That's a pretty good idea and luckily I have some gun oil laying around. I can try that relatively quickly to discourage the rust and corrosion and it will take a major load off my mind until I create a more permanent solution.

Thanks!

Before you fix it how's about posting a picture of the problem area?

Thanks,
Charlie
