Low speed howl?
Has anyone experienced a distinct howl noise at between 45 and 60 mph? I have an 05 with 3500 mi on it, tires are good and it's completely stock. It's not engine noise because it doesn't stop when I pull in the clutch. It's present on any surface, though I haven't had it up that fast on gravel or dirt, but I don't think it's tire noise. I would suspect aerodynamic noise, but then wouldn't every fz6 make that noise? If anyone knows, someone in here must. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

ah, I'm not alone in this phenomenon!! Yes I have it also, the first time I heard it I thought it was a wheel bearing, but everything checks out O.K. I have just shy of 8000 miles on mine and I noticed it during the "break in" period.
I got used to it and don't even think about it until you brought it up. personally I wouldn't worry about it, but if you have the time to visit the dealer and they find anything let me know. P.S. if your FZ6 is red, its just the afterburner spooling up!!!! (proving the red ones are faster once and for all!!!)

Yeah, I too get that noise on my '07 around that speed in 3rd gear but no other gear or speed. I can't put my finger on it either. The sound I get is kind of a low pitch, I don't want to say howl because it's not that bad but I can't think ant other way to discribe it. Sounds to me like it comes from the sprockets but I've double checked the chain tension and wheel alignment and every thing is up to spec. All I can say is I have the Y.E.S. and that should take care of it if it becomes a problem.........I hope.LOL

I think aerodynamic noise may be a factor - any one with noise have a non-standard windscreen? I noticed a noise that I would describe as a howl (that I thought was tires) with the tall factory windscreen on, but it's now largely gone when I swapped to the standard one recently. Thinking it could be the windscreen itself or gaps around the rubber mirror coverings or maybe something else...

I have an idea. Those of us that seem to get this sound, get the bike up to speed so it makes the noise, hold that speed and pull in the clutch. If the noise goes away it's in the drive line somewhere, if it keeps making the noise it's most likely aerodynamic. What do you think?

It could be helmholtz resonance from the open casting wheels.
Coke bottle whistle across the open casting holes. Or it could be a resonance (however the hell you spell it) from the air box or a hole in the fairing, or the the little holes in the exhaust pipe braces. Just a thought. I was a submarine sonarman, and we were responsible for making the boat quiet. We would take bees wax and fill in the allen socket heads on all the bolts, any small hole that could be found that could possibley make noise. Dont know if it will help any, but there is what I know. LOL I dont hear it. 07 factory screen, add chin fairing, and tank bag. Usually with earplugs inside a helmet.
