Top enlisted officer in a company? Thats my guess......

Its short for first sergeant.

Top is a term of respect and endearment for a First Sergeant. The First Sergeant is the senior enlisted person in a Company. A company is 120 to 200 Soldiers. The First Sergeant is the father of the company responsible for the good order and discipline of the company. The First Sergeant is the advisor to the Company Commander and is the most technically and tactically proficient Soldier in the Company.

Another term is First Shirt as the First Sergeant is the first Soldier who stand before the company when they are in formation.

The First Sergeant runs the company, the Company Commander leads the company. The First Sergeant ensures the commands and instructions of the Company Commander are carried out in a timely fashion and manner.

The First Sergeant is responsible for the living conditions of the Soldier, housing, feeding, clothing, transportation. The skills of the Soldier, individual skills and collective skills.

Bottomline, the buck stops with them, ie: Top.

Also he is the one that really decides if request chits happen or not. At least it was that way in the navy.

AND!!!! They get a LOT more respect that 1st and 2nd Lieutenants even though they are not Officers but Enlisted.

I generally respected my first sergeants and sergeant majors wayy more than o1-o3 becuase they had actually "been there done that" Obviously this is not always the case with all officers but I had a 1LT who could barely load an M-16....... and he's telling me what to do?????????????

Top, it sounds like you have practicing and polishing that speech for quite some time now.... good ish
