the chronicles of sportrider

so here we go again, in our last episode we learned that the kill switch was bad and after a trip to the dealer we verified that it was the kill switch(not the ignition switch as preveously stated) that was the problem. I had her (the service wrighter)pull my invoice and verifiy that I did infact pay for the part, also I had her talk to the "tech"(I use this term loosely here) that said he installed the new one. so I asked her if I could have my old switch,so I could see what it looked like.(I'm being diplomatic here. I know what the switch looks like, seeing how I've pulled mine off the bike and inspected it. I've come to the conclusion that the switch is bad, and it has never been replaced.) would you believe me if I told you the mechanic couldn't remember where the old switch was. I asked her what were they going to do about my problem, stating that if they hadn't fixed the bike I wouldn't have bought the service, tires, and exhaust system. she told me that the manager wasn't in at the time and she would have him call me when he got in. I told her I'm trying to be cool about this but as of right now I'm very dissatisfied with the way things are going. she appoligized and said she understands my frustration, but there is nothing she can di until the manager returns. so I leave (after picking up my stock exhaust and the 2 bolts that weren't installed into the tail section, which the factory bolts were tossed, so they had to give me replacments)

I'm at home and the phone rings, it's the service wrighter. she says they need me to bring my (stalling, don't stay lit, spudder spudder die) bike the 35 miles of freeway back to the dealer so they can check it out again. I tell her it's a little late today so I'll bring it in tomorrow (which is today). this morning I get up and decide that they won't be touching my bike again. I decide to remove the switch myself, solder the wires together that connect to the switch and test ride the bike to see if it acts up. after completeing my 10+ mile test ride, I come to the conclusion that the switch was infact the problem and they did not replace it. so in a few minutes I'm leaving for the dealer with the old (stock) switch and going to show them that it wasn't replaced. I will be asking for a new switch that I already paid for, and telling them I will be installing it myself so I know it gets done.

on a side note; the new scorpions, that I had to reinstall so they were lined up correctly, are sick!!! they sound so freaking awesome. I havent really noticed a difference in power but that's not why I got them anyways.

here are some pictures of the culprit. I tried to clean the contacts with an emery board but the switch is just to sloppy to make a good contact.

Glad you figured out what is wrong with it. Its a shame what the dealership is putting you through. Good luck when you go up there.

Danny, Good to hear that you (not they) fixed it. I know I would be steaming by now especially as they billed you for the part I would not let them fit the switch as they can then say they fixed it for you.
Once again pleased to hear you're back on the road with a working bike

Re: the chronicles of sportrider

Yet another horror story about dealer service... glad you're bike is running at least. If it were me, I'd do two things 1) Call my bank and contest the amount paid for the service that wasn't rendered 2) Write Yamaha and report the dealer for crappy service. Doing this, I wouldn't be suprised if you end up on the + side.

My kill switch died last summer and luckily the group I ride with is full of mechanically-inclined, who promptly got me rolling again At first I thought it was bad gas, the bike kept stalling and I would restart while rolling. Eventually it died and failed to start. Same thing you did: looped the circuit to bypass the switch and it ran like a champ.

Well done Danny! Glad you've located and fixed the issue. Awesome work!

Those Scorpions look GREAT! So, how come your cans are not hanging WAY out the back like others? I think yours look installed "correctly" where others do not. Seeing them out there another 2" was one of things that always turned me off with the Scorpions. I'll say your install looks the best thus far! They did ONE thing right!!!
