Removing Light Rust? Any Suggestions?

Hello All,

I have just purchased an '05 Blue FZ6 w/ 1200 miles on it (yes that is hundreds of miles). I was very happy w/ the price since I paid cash, but the bike had been outside for the last 6 months or so. (Beware when they say garage stored! I had to call BS on that one!) Anyway, there are a few small rust spots that I would like to take care of quickly and return the bike to where it should be.

ON THE BRAKE ROTORS

ON THE FRAME AND CHAIN

ON THE HANDLE BAR

Help with Submiting pictures would Help as well! Picasa Web Albums - William - Rust on the Bike

I would like to keep all the parts I can, but I would like to also remain safe. Like the chain for instance, should I replace it or remove the rust, clean and lube it?

Big question is can anyone match the paint on the frame and handle bar?
I have looked at the Yamaha site and auto paint suppliers w/ no luck.

Thanks ahead of time,
Wes Wood

Ok, So the dremel works ok on the Disk brakes, but does close to nothing to the chain. Any idea how much a new chain costs?
I have only found it as a sprocket-chain combo.

I purchased an aerosol can of yamaha black for my o6 from Colorrite.com. Abit steep at $40 a can but it matches perfectly. Had to spray the subframe and it turned out flawlessly.

It is in your best intrest to replace sprockets and chains as a set. They wear in together.

How rusty is the chain? The photos do not show up.

Re: Removing Light Rust? Any Suggestions?

1st off, thanks lazamus69, colorite is awsome, I hope that the color matches as well for me as it did for you.

wrightme43, I just cleaned the chain thoroughly and coated it w/ ChainWax. There is no binding or jumping and it has a sopt rust on the outside of the links. The link to picasa should work. Let me know if you have some advice about posting pics and I will sort that out. As for replacing the chain and sprocket together, I would be more inclined to do so if they were really high time, but they only have 1200 miles and the sprocket has very little wear. The only thing that I can see wrong w/ the chain is the rust spots.

Thanks, Wes

Re: Removing Light Rust? Any Suggestions?

Rust? I LOVE IT!! It's a basic representation of getting old! Knowledge, wisdom, sore backs...ha ha ha!

NOW FOR THE REAL ANSWER

1) Go out and buy an SOS pad. You know those STEEL WOOL things people use for cleaning? Go out an get one.

2) Run COLD WATER on the SOS pad until ALL the soap comes out of it. Make sure you use COLD water and LET IT DRY. This will take a while...

3) You take that steel wool and you lightly rub over those rusty spots. Rub lightly and over the frame and chain. It you press too hard, you'll need another SOS pad. You may want to disassemble your handlebars and rub out the rust in them too.

4) When all the rust is gone, you'll need to give your chain a lube job. A good one. Try my method!! You'll also need to paint over those rusty spots on the frame or get a rust primer like this:

TIPS FOR PREVENTING RUST

-NO hot water. NEVER use warm or hot water. Hot water will speed up rusting.

-Do you have a key connected to the one in your ignition? If that flings around in the wind and hits your handlebars, you'll cause slight scratches where rust can build up.

-Lube your chain after it rains. Lube it alot but wipe excess lube away.

-Buy a breathable motorcycle cover

-Painting over rust? Make sure to sand away as much as possible, prime and use plenty of thick coats of paint.

-You've got rust under your hand-grips on the handlebars. There's ALWAYS rust in the hand grips.

-Make sure all connecting points are tight and use anodized/plastic washers.

-Wash the bike with cold water to get rid of soil and salt.

-Be liberal with your oils and lubes.

-Be liberal with paint.

-When getting rid of rust, get rid of ALL of it or NONE of it.

-Rust actually ADDS weight to the motorcycle.

I've dealt with rust THOUSANDS of times on my vehicles and after each session, they look brand new! Good luck out there.

When you sprayed the subframe, did you remove and spray the entire part, or just the spot needed?

I had to replace my sub-frame so I painted it before I replaced it(used part)
