8000 Mile Service
My 8000 mile service is coming up within the week...........what does the dealer do besides change the spark plugs? Is it worth doing myself?
Thanks, Nick

Re: 8000 Mile Service
Do it yourself... even the sparkplugs are easy... Throttle body sync is pretty straight forward (if you need it), but you will need a tool to do it (like motion pro carb tune). Again, throttle body sync would make the bike run a bit smoother, but nothing will happen if you wait a little longer to do it....

I would mark the plugs some how before you take it in... They may try and screw you and leave the old ones in.

Actually it wasn't too bad. The number 4 plug on the 2007 was slightly more difficult than the other three. Going there the service manual torque value (13 ft.lbs.) felt too tight. I torqued my to 10 ft.lb., I was not going to snap off a plug in my engine. No I was not!!! It probably felt tighter than actual...? |

Re: 8000 Mile Service
Inch pounds are lighter than foot pounds. 13 inch pounds wouldn't have felt tight at all if it's supposed to be ft. lbs.

Re: 8000 Mile Service
Agree, 13 ft.lbs. probably wasn't tight. It felt tight though, but then I have only a deflecting beam torque wrench and there wasn't much room to get a good feel [travel] on the socket.
I'm thinking my 10 ft.lbs. will be just fine. |

Re: 8000 Mile Service
Man, you can get the "Motion Pro" throttle synch set up for around $70 from "Tool Source." You don't need any adaptors as the ones that come with it automatically work great with the 4 FZ6 vacumn lines (2 lines tucked in each side after you raise the fuel tank; you remove the stock vacumn line plugs and connect the 4 Motion Pro lines with the adaptors). You first calibrate the tool with #1 line that has the pink ribbon on on of the left side lines (calibration procedure is explained on the back side of the device. The money you spend on the tool will probably be less than what you pay the dealer to do it and, after you do it, you will understand and KNOW that it's been done correctly. There's video by Fred and Hellgate on how to do it. It's also explained in the service manual. It's actually kinda "fun" to do it the first time. But, if you're not comfortable with the idea, by all means, have somebody else do it. I dunno, I'm just "into" working on my own machine.
