In need of bike to bike communication

My best friend and I are going to be making a 500 mile day trip to see his parents in PA. We are looking for a way to communicate between the bikes while riding as a form of communication and safety. We are looking for something that is not going to kill our wallets, but something that will work for close handsfree communication. My wife will kill both of us if we spend lots of money of it.

All suggestions are welcome.

Hunter

Re: In need of bike to bike communication

These work pretty good, but wireless would be much better

Midland AVP-H2
Accessory Speaker Microphone for Motorcycle Helmet.
For Closed Faced Helmet
Includes two speakers that attach inside the helmet.
Boom microphone to go inside helmet.
PTT button that wraps on handle bar.
Extra long cable
Works with ALL Midland GMRS/FRS Radios

I paid $76 including shipping, any Midland radios will work. Best Buy has a pair of radios with rechargeable battery packs and base charger for $28.

For $100 total cost for bike to bike communications, for occasional use, it will work. If you plan on riding with communication frequently, I'd go with a wireless system

and this will allow us to use the midlands with it right? What about talking...does it use a sensor or does it use the push buttons?

Thanks!

Hello man nice to see someone in the area with a FZ6. I was going to tell you I don't know much about hands free communication devices but was going to wish you two a fun and safe trip.

I liked Boneman's communications solution (Helmet Radios & Comms: MotoComm MC554 Headset/Mic).

Re: In need of bike to bike communication

thanks cloggy for the link. I think that we would be better off purchasing two small 2 ways from walmart and finding the headsets online with some kind of push to talk.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Keep em coming.

Re: In need of bike to bike communication

I have been looking into stuff for my wife and I as well. I already have two older motorola talkabouts but haven't spent the money on headsets yet. (Do I spend $50 x2 on headsets or just throw the $100 towards a better setup?) Anyway one thing to be mindful of with the small radios that they don't advertise except in the back of the manual under common problems is if the radios are too close together they won't transmit. Mileage may very but depending on the weather if mine are 0-30 feet apart the transmission is bad (0-15 will make your ears bleed).

Windnoise is also going to be a problem.

Look on e bay for motorcycle communication and you may be lucky.

I got a Starcom advance complete for 25 pounds on e bay.
