Re: Just got over 7k RPM for the first time... WOW!
Preloading the shifter is when you press gently up on the shifter before a shift to ease the jerkiness of the shift. This way, when you let off the throttle and pull in the clutch, the transmission moves more smoothly into the next gear. It's especially useful when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
See what you guys have taught me?? Fwiw, I think it's funny that it was exactly a month ago that I started this thread. Now 7k is my new home and 12k is my vacation house! ![]() -John |

I've found that it does not take much effort to pop a wheelie going from 1st to 2nd. Be careful and don't do anything like that till you are more comfortable with shifting normally.

Re: Just got over 7k RPM for the first time... WOW!
I kind of like to have the front wheel on the ground myself, so I get it just hopping a touch and keep it there
. Still have about 10-15mm of throttle at this point (unless I stand on the footpegs and lay on the bars...lol) in first but second's fair game for the lot ...lol.Can feel the acceleration drop off at around 12,200 revs so for me change is at 12k too. Cheers Mike |

Re: Just got over 7k RPM for the first time... WOW!
Ok so I guess I'm kind of a pansy here, I've brought the bike to 12k once in second, but for the most part I shift around 5k until this last week after reading the forums and I've been cruising around 7k and shifting around 8k. Now it could just be my being used to cars but in 2nd I notice the engine kinda sounds whiney around 6k so I normally shift up to third. Am I just worrying over nothing?
Next question, I have literally a 3 miles commute to work on a 45mph road, which I normally ride around 55-60, is it bad for the bike to near never get above third gear? I see a lot of people talking about riding 12k rpms and I fail to see how you ever get out of third even on the highway, so I'm kind of assuming nobody ever gets to 5th 6th gear. Am I missing something, over thinking things or just being a pansy. |

Don't get me wrong. Most times while commuting I ride just quick enough to stay ahead of traffic then back off while short changing to the appropriate gear for cruising speed. ![]() Cheers Mike |
