I put it on the centerstand.
If you like you can tape a little aluminum foil trough to direct it towards your drain pan I just wipe it off.

oil change question reply
if you take a center punch or a sharp tipped screwdriver and make a hole in the front of the filter and let it drain before you take it off you will end up with very little mess.
