Coding replacement key

I currently only have 1 key. I want to get a replacement key (spare) made but do not have a "red key". My local dealer told me I have to replace the ECU an ignition. Is this true and what are my options?

Please help!!

Re: Coding replacement key

Bugga. I'm afraid the dealer is right. I was told when I bought my bike, don't ever lose the red key, or you'll need to replace the lot if I lose my keys.

Sorry dude.

Re: Coding replacement key

Not sure what other options you have ,but it is true, you must have the red key to recode a new black one otherwise you have to change the ECU and the immobiliser .
They warned me about it too and said you would be looking at around $1800 !

Didn't you get one with the bike ?

Re: Coding replacement key

Dealers are supposed to have tools to code the special keys.
If not, that's a very terrible design flaw.

It should cost you $100~ to get them made. Cheaper than replacing everything.

The red key is coded to the bike(ecu and immobiliser)lose it and you are up for a lot more than $100.

Re: Coding replacement key

You guys also live in the states. The guys across the pond have a few more features than we do. You should see the size of their keys too.
