What to do for track day.
I recieved this voucher for a free 1/2 track day plus instruction with my FZ6 purchase, I was wondering what I should do to the bike to prepare for the track day.
I was planning on taking off all of the plastics (the few that there are), and was considering taking off the mirrors, signals, and front fairing. Basically, I wanted to go as naked as possible, even taking off the headlights with the front fairing. The track is about a 2 hour drive from where I live. So if I take everything off, I obviously can't ride the bike there since it won't be street legal. Should I take everything off before and rent a truck to haul the bike? Or is it possible to ride it there and do it all down there, then put it back on the bike before I ride it back up? How long would that take? |

Re: What to do for track day.
I recommend stripping it down at home. Rent a U-haul trailer or truck and haul the bike to the track day.
Here's my reasoning. 1. You want to be fresh for the track, not tired from two hours of riding. 2. You stand a good chance of dumping the bike on the track. I have never been t a track day that didn't have at least one wreck, out of perhaps 50 bikes. Want to play those odds with your expensive bodywork? 3. If you do dump your bike, how are you going to get home? Fred

Re: What to do for track day.
Check the track rules first as they can differ from place to place regarding what you need to do. There's also requirements for the gear you will be wearing so make sure you meet those guidelines as well.
As for insurance, these are considered driving schools so don't worry if you go down and need to file a claim to repair the bike.

Re: What to do for track day.
Insurance-wise, I don't have comprehensive (way too expensive for me, I want it, but simply can't afford over $2,000 a year) so I am worried about the cost of repairs.
I think I just may strip it down completely, it might look a bit goofy, but I would cry if I did any damage to the bodywork. Even then, I'm still going to be worried about the frame and tank. |

how about leaving your bike as it is. Tape up the glass bits and go with the view of enjoying yourself and learning a bit about your limits and the bikes limits. No pressure, take some pics and do a fab write up of your experience of track day heaven. Nelly

Re: What to do for track day.
Insurance companies generally will not cover an accident that happens on the track. You can buy track insurance, I think, but don't count on your policy to cover you.
Another reason for the trailer. If you wreck on the track, you can tow the wreck to an empty road and place it on the outside of a corner. "Officer, a deer ran in front of me and I lost control while avoiding it. I'll need to fill out a police report for my insurance." Fred

Re: What to do for track day.
I'm with Fred on everything but the insurance comments. It differs from policy to policy and company to company. I know tons of people that have claimed their crashes without playing games. Most new track riders are advised to check with their providers. More importantly, make sure your HEALTH insurance covers you. EDIT - it's important to note (not sure if I was clear) that on the other hand many ins. companies will NOT cover track days, so again, make sure you check (should be in the information they sent you...don't take an agent's verbal word for it).
So to echo, don't ride there; trailer your bike or if you must, ride there the night before and camp out. removing your peg feelers and stands would be a plus...they can touch down at the wrong time and can do damage to your body in a wreck. what year is your bike? and last but not least, post pictures when you're done!!!
